| Customer Reviews: Perfect fit for web centric needs. Gamers look elsewhere August 5, 2010 Allen Woolley 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
This machine was given as a gift to my wife's parents to replace an 8 year old full sized desktop Celeron PC.
This model is not intended to be a fire breathing gamer rig for your FPS games, instead it is intended to be a high value for the money machine for exactly the web-centric usage my in-laws have. If games are important to you, this is the wrong machine to be looking at.
It arrived on time and was exactly what they needed: An affordable dual core high memory machine with lots of USB ports (6 of the 9 ports are in use) and low end nVidia graphics capability so they could use Facebook apps like Farmville, play Youtube videos, use Skype to video call family and do other semi-graphics intensive things like Netflicks smoothly.
The machine was simple to set up (I am a highly experienced technical person and know computers and operating systems from the ground up, so your mileage may vary here) and the machine did everything I expected it to do. My only complaint was I had to to click a lot of boxes agreeing to a excessive number of pre-installed applications terms.
Total setup time was about 6 hours mainly due to the many Windows, Anti-virus and nVidia driver updates along with other application installs like Skype.
I uninstalled the MS Office demo and some of the other trial-ware to free up more resources for the system. This is a worthwhile time investment as the trial-ware is memory, CPU and disk hungry stuff.
The Windows 7 user migration tool worked as advertised and imported all their photos and other personal data off the old XP Home machine. A tip here is to use a wired network on both PCs or you will be in for a very long, as in over night or even longer, wait for the files to be transfered.
Since I only had one monitor, and the Home versions of Windows do not include Remote Desktop, I installed the free and excellent TightVNC from [...] on both machines so I could control the old XP box from the new eMachines computer.
Everything worked out great and the in-laws are delighted to have a much faster, much smaller and much better Windows 7 PC to use. The main keys to this machine's success in order are:
- The 4GB of installed memory
- Dual core CPU
- On board nVidia chip
The small form factor is a most welcome addition to the feature list followed finally by the 500GB hard drive which will likely never go over 25% full.
For it's intended purpose, this machine is a perfect fit. The price has already fallen $20 at another online shop from when I bought it a month ago here, so be sure to shop around for the best deal.
Great style, performance, and price August 6, 2010 G. Zhou (Detroit, MI USA) 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
This computer is all around great. It's quiet, small, fast, and cheap. Many people dog eMachines because they're cheap, but I have never had a problem with their products (this is my 3rd eMachine). Windows 7 runs smooth and its customization format is much more user friendly compared to Vista. The only slight negative of this computer is its graphics card is only mediocre, but if you're not going to do any hardcore gaming, then it will definitely serve its job. I highly recommend this computer.
